Neighbors without borders. How do they implement a unique EU project in OHMATDYT in Lviv?

As part of an EU project, the hospital will open a new operating room, receive modern equipment for three wards and a telemedicine center.

The Lviv Regional Children's Clinical Hospital OHMATDYT has won an international Ukrainian-Polish project, under which it will receive a powerful telemedicine center and modern equipment for minimally invasive surgeries, in particular laparoscopic and endoscopic operations.

In the frame of the project “A joint initiative of the Masovian Specialized Hospital in Ostrołęka and the Lviv Regional Children's Clinical Hospital OHMATDYT in order to increase the availability of medical services in the field of modern surgery" financed by the Cross-Border-Cooperation Program Poland-Belarus-Ukraine 2014-2020 the Lviv hospital will receive modern equipment for operating room. It will open a modern telemedicine consultation center, so that the most modern operations will be available to everyone.

According to Fedir Yurochko, a participant in the OHMATDYT initiative, cross-border cooperation between the Lviv hospital and the hospital in Ostrołęka is not only about equipment. It is also about new contacts, exchange of experiences, and emotional support from neighbors.

"We are excited about the new opportunities that make us stronger and better," says Fedir Yurochko.

The project is financed from two sources: the EU and the Lviv Regional Council. The project is implemented jointly with the Masovian Specialist Hospital in Ostrołęka (Poland).

In general, the project covers three important areas.

A modern operating room

The new operating room will be equipped with modern medical equipment for laparoscopic, microsurgical, and endoscopic operations. This will allow doctors to perform the most complex interventions.

Urologists and ENT specialists will receive modern Karl Storz operating equipment. Otolaryngologists are already mastering new equipment for ear microsurgery. Two new anesthetic devices will minimize the risk to the child and closely monitor the condition of the child during surgery. This means that the hospital will have more minimally invasive surgeries, children will recover faster, and most importantly, after the operations on the second or third day, they will be able to go home.

Conferences for doctors

Within the framework of the cross-border project, the Lviv Regional Children's Clinical Hospital OHMATDYT is organizing two conferences to exchange experiences. The first conference has already been held in Ostrołęka, and the next one will take place in Lviv. Professionals will meet here to share their best practices.

A modern telemedicine center

So that the work does not stop and the two participating hospitals can develop further, they will open a modern telemedicine center in Lviv. For this purpose, OHMATDYT has modernized the conference room, where the telemedicine center will start operating. It will serve for Lviv pediatric surgeons to conduct laparoscopy training and share medical knowledge with their colleagues. Moreover, consultations of medical experts and live broadcasts will take place directly from the operating room.

In addition, the doctors of the Lviv Regional Children's Clinical Hospital OHMATDYT in the first days of the pandemic received many protective suits, medical masks, disinfectants, and a portable ultrasound machine from the Programme. These project activities helped to open COVID departments in the hospital within a few days and start admitting the first patients from the entire Lviv region.
